Devotional #3 - 3/19/2020

From Hank Uzzell

John 15

I love this passage of Scripture for many different reasons. I ended up reading this passage everyday for two straight weeks some years back. It was wildly developmental and has shaped my theology greatly.

I appreciated Bobby’s devotional very much. I usually can relate to “college” Bobby. Up for most things and excited about lots! But, this past week has been an all out battle for my mind and emotions. I swing between “lots of free time, yes!!”, and despair because of the unknown that this next season of life will bring.

I find great joy in John 15:4 “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” I HAVE to take each day as it comes, day by day. The call here on my life is to “abide”. When I preach from this passage I often use the illustration from my childhood. After a long day of playing with my dad, my brother and I would join him on the couch for a story. We could sit under his arm, next to a warm wood stove, and he would read to us. I would always be tired from playing and enjoying my Father, that I fell asleep quickly.

“Bearing fruit” will begin to look different than you had envisioned, even 4 or 5 days ago. There will surely will be more alone time that you would like. More isolation and having to great strides to keep you and your loved ones healthy. My encouragement is to look for new and unique ways to be fruitful and God will meet you in that spot and give you what you need!

This past week, I have thought of that word abide often. I run to the Father, and sit and dwell with him. I talk with him and listen to his affirming words “I am in control and I love you.” These next couple weeks, would you join me in abiding and see what our Heavenly Father has for us?
